~FRESH WHITE LILACS and Dreaming of Spring~

LILACS

My vision of a lilac world
is held in trust for me
by friends who'll never know
they're friends
and lovers I've held only once.

I'd let them know, but how?
I'd fit them in, but when?
No one's needs are that
of being fitted in.
Everyone demands
their full round share of time.

But oh those few
who've found the time
to fit me in-
schedule me somehow
within their crowded lives-
are remembered almost daily.
At night they all come back
every bit as real as lilac smells
on April days.

Rod McKuen

Thank you for fitting me in...

  3. Thank you for fitting all of us in. I love the pic and can't wait to smell the fragrance of the beautiful lilacs. It seems far off, but the way time flies we will be smelling the flowers before we know it. Thanks for the beautiful poem. It is lovely!!

  7. Dear Sweet Rebecca,
Oh how I wish we could have lush Lilac Bushes in Georgia. I lived in the suburbs of Chicago until I was 13, and I can still remember the heady fragrance of the Lilac bushes. I understand that there is a variety of Lilac that grow well in the south, but is not as fragrant or lush as the old fashioned variety that I remember.
Thank you for bringing forth such a sweet reminder of past times. XOXOXO, Carol

  11. Oh... I have 2 lilac bushes in my small little yard. One is the deep purple and one is the lighter shade. We won't be seeing those for awhile as a foot of snow is predicted for tomorrow!

  14. What a wonderful poem Rebecca. Thank you for sharing it with us, and especially for making me acquainted with Rod McKuen whom I didn't know before I read his poem.
All we've had here is months of unceasing rain - day in day out - and I'm getting so tired of it. can't wait for spring to knock on my door which I will then let wide open to let the sun, the warmth and the colors of the blossoms in.
I'm now off to learn more about Rod McKuen from the internet.

  19. Well I do, in fact lilacs are my favorite. When I was a child I lived in Wakita on a farm and there was a giant lilac bush just below my upstairs bedroom window and I woke to that sweet wonderful fragrance every spring. Now when I smell a lilac it takes me back to those happy, carefree days. Thank you for reminding me. Beautiful poem.

  23. G'morn, Rebecca ~ I can't imagine a day without you, one of so few ... lilacs or not.
    I love RK writings.

I had about 70' of lilacs bushes & I got this hair brained idea to take them out & save just a few ... oh, how I miss that fragrance lingering in the sweet spring dew filled air as we greet each new morn. My neighbors were pretty upset with me also ... I may have to plant them back ...

    Have a beautiful day.
    Hugs of love, Marydon
