~CUTTING A PATTERN FROM A GREAT FIND~ Romantic Tote Bag in the Making

Yesterday I stopped in at our local Goodwill for a little peek around.  Generally I don't find anything at this particular store...not the one in the town I live in anyway.  I've been there more times than I can say over the past few years, but rarely walk away with much of anything.  Not sure what the deal is here.  I mean...I've found great stuff at thrift stores in the past~just not at this particular Goodwill.
Anyway...while scouring the racks for old books and patterns I came across this interesting Tote Bag.  It had never been used and still had the original TJMaxx price tag of $16.99 on it.  Goodwill's price was $1.99.
I looked over the Tote and especially loved the tie-up shoulder straps.  The Tote had a really interesting design so I decided to bring it home with me.
My plans?

Tonight I'm going to spend some time splitting her seems and cutting a pattern from the assembled Tote.
No markings were on the inside only the MADE IN CHINA Tag!
Wouldn't this design be fabulous made up in vintage Barkcloth or even fashioned in natural twill with vintage laces and trims?
Definitely some fabulous possibilities here.  I grew tired of making the over-done Totes of the early 2000's and today favor the more popular less-is-more 'shabby-romantic-boho' look...
What do you think?  Any ideas?  Would love to know what your heart sees!!!
Today I'm back in the studio today PAINTIN' MY LIFE AWAY (and loving it!)...

Love to you...

Ooooooh, a gorgeous burlap fabric (not the scratchy kind) with just a touch of crochet lace...that's what I see.

I LOVE how you think outside the box! The purse is so cute, but it's going to be cuter in the fabric you described. Go for it!!

Hi beautiful Rebecca! Oh, how smart you are to take apart the bag to make a pattern. Whatever you decide, I know it will look all pretty, girly and lacey.
Oh, I peeped at you and your old flame and how cute you were. You didn't look happy! :) You were born to craft! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I vote for barkcloth! And a removable dupioni silk flower pin!

I don't know if you know this, Rebecca...but I'm a "bag lady." Those overdone bags were never really my style...even though I made TONS of them for eBay. Now that I'm sewing more for myself, I'm letting my personal style come through...and I'm happier with what I'm making. I've been working on a Tote with braided handles...a detail that I copied from a bag that I saw in an expensive boutique. It's fun!

Happy Sewing!

I love the Boho look in tote bags too. I have been happily sketching and yes making some patterns of totes that I hope to soon (someday) FINALLY get into my Etsy shop. I have this mammoth stash of flowery, girly and yes some funky fabric that screams at me everytime I walk into my work room. Until then I will keep on stashin and keep on sketchin. I want retirement to hurry up and get here!!!

I do love the look and the shape of your tote.
Hugs, Sue
