~MAD HATTER SYNDROME...Keeper of Vintage Millinery Hats~

~KEEPER OF OLD HATS~

From as far back as I can remember I've been crazy about vintage hats.  Quite honestly I blame my mother for it.  Forever etched in my memory is a vision of her clothed in a simple black sheath dress, complete with a single strand of creamy white pearls and topped off with a wide brimmed, solid black hat (fresh white gloves of course,  too...)!
~DAINTY PINK ROSES~

Pure loveliness and total femininity.  She was thirty-four years old and I was only 'almost' nine.
~A FAVORITE STRAW~

I've never been one who could pull off wearing a hat, but...that doesn't keep me from buying them.  Especially those floral finds that come graced with old millinery blooms like cabbage roses and vintage camellias.  And...if there is a sampling of old Forget-Me-Knots or soft white Lilacs in the mix...well then, I'm pretty much sold.
~GORGEOUS OLD ROSES~

My favorite old hats are the ones made of straw...  I love all kinds but the ones that are rumpled and worn from the 30's and 40's will always steal my heart away...
~A PASSION FOR PINK~

Now...if a hat is soft pink and includes dainty pink roses or fanciful bows tied up with satin or faille ribbons...well then...you can be sure it's going home with me!
~AND CREAMY WHITES~

I'd love someday to offer for sale SOME of the hats I discover at out-of-the-way antique shoppes or estate and tag sales...but so far I've never been able to part with a single one.   I feel sooo selfish! :)
~MY FAVORITE ONE EVER~

Still, I buy ONLY what I truly love and pass on everything else (just wish I didn't love so much)!  Keeps my Mr. AGPMan from totally flipping out over the cost of things, you know?  Good thing I know a great hiding place for all those receipts...

I'll share more soon...

Blessings for an awesome Thursday.  I'm off to work in my studio (you all are keeping me hopping)...

such lovely hats and a sweet story
about your mother.

in our very hot city, many people
drive white cars, and many of those
cars look my mom's. but hers has
a straw hat in the back windshield,
so i can always identify it!

Hi Rebbecca...
I enjoyed reading your reflections.
Your hats are wonderful. I bought a new one myself not long ago and it was a very hard pick.

I was at a thrift store shortly before Easter that had hit the "Mother Lode" of someone's fabulous hat collection. All styles and colors.

Most were STILL in their original hatboxes and DATED by the wearer. I supposed to myself that she had died and her children or someone cleaned out her closets and dumped them off to this thrift store.
Sad.

Thanks for sharing...I hadn't been here and awhile and it was fun to visit!

OH SWEET REBECCA, YOU HAVE TOUCHED ON A SUBJECT THAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. MY MOTHER NEVER WORE A HAT AND I DON'T REMEMBER EVER SEEING HER IN ONE. HAVING BEEN BORN AND RAISED 3RD GENERATION IN SACTO, CA, THE ONLY HATS I REMEMBER MY GRANDMOTHER WEARING, WERE LARGE BRIM STRAW HATS THAT SHE WORE IN THE GARDEN. NOW, LIVING IN THE DESERT, I WEAR STRAW HATS BECAUSE OF THE SUN......BUT, THAT BEING SAID, WE ARE KNOW TO WEAR A BASEBALL CAP WHEN HAVING A BAD HAIR DAY!!! SOMEHOW I DOUBT VERY MUCH THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE IN MIND. YOU VINTAGE HATS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND I WILL NOW KEEP MY EYES OPEN FOR THE TREASURES OF LONG AGO. MY SWEET FRIEND, NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR KEEPING YOUR TREASURES. YOU ENJOY THEM SO MUCH AND THEY BRING YOU SUCH PLEASURE THAT I AM SURE EVEN YOUR SWEET MAN WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO PART WITH THEM. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HOW YOU DISPLAY SUCH BEAUTY IN AND AROUND YOUR HOME. I WOULD THINK EVERY FEMALE THAT LAYS EYES ON THEM, WOULD STARE IN WONDER AT A PERFECT BYEGONE ERA. TAKE CARE AND WAITING FOR MORE, CHAR

Rebecca, thank you for your thoughts and prayers for Cassandra.

I love your beautiful hats. I've always admired them on others, but I look goofy in a hat.

Treasures are wonderful....

i love hats too...to collect and embellish! But I , like my mother, don't like to wear hats . My mother always hated to "mess up her hairdo"!! LOL!
I do love to admire at them though and every now and then when I go to something that my Victorian group is doing, I will wear a hat.
Those that you shared with us today are gorgeous and I wouldn't want to part with them either.

Rebecca you have such a lovely collection of hats! I sure wish we dressed with more care these days like our mother's did. I never remember my mother leaving the house without a dress and her make up and gloves. Then sometime in the late sixties, that all seemed to change. Sad for us.
I'm a jeans and blouse kindda girl myself, but somehow I think I would have loved to live when it was the style to wear the gloves and pearls.

My love affair with hats began when I got cancer and had to do chemotherapy. I bought several expensive hats because I decided I didn't want to buy wigs. It was winter, which was great for hats, and with the snow the knit hats fit perfect, but not for church. I began to almost enjoy the experience of wearing my lovely hats to church, and when I was able, to a nice restaurant. And now, the chemo is over but I'm still wearing and enjoying hats. My hats were lovely, as are yours. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Rebecca :) OMG!! I adore your beautiful hats! I don't think I could ever part with any of them either. I use to buy things because I "just had to have it", but then end up regretting it later. Now I am much more selective and particular about what I purchase. I hope we get to see more of your lovely hat collection :) Have a good up-coming weekend, and don't work yourself too much, LOL :) Warmest always, Brenda

Rebecca, your hates are absolutely fabulous, elegant, delicate, feminine treasures. They bring back MANY A MEMORY of G'ma Maggie wearing small hats adorned with flowers & Mother wearing big hats of all styles & sizes ... even we kids wore little hats to church ... & we ALL had those sweet nylon gloves. Mother had gloves galore in her satin box. It was expected of us to dress 'like ladies' ... & we sure did.

Your collection I'd have a hard time parting with, also ... particularly the first & last.

Have a lovely eve ...
Hugs in love, Marydon

Your posting of the photos of your lovely vintage hats brought back many memories. Being a Catholic we wore hats to Mass for all of my growing up years..until Jackie Kennedy started the mantalia
era......my mother had some pretty hats, too, and I saved some of them
to remember her...I especially love the lacy beige straw one she had...it is a "picture" brim one..
.I put flowers around the brim and wore it sometimes myself as I got older!....thanks for bringing back some great memories!
Your blogs always leave me with a good feeling!! Love, Francy

Hi Rebecca, I loved this and it brought back memories of when I was a young and single mother with two little girls and worked "downtown" as a telephone operator. Well having no car, we rode the bus everywhere and Saturday was "our" day. The girls and I would spend the entire day walking around and going in each store, buying popcorn and feeding the birds on the courthouse square and having a soda afterwards at the drug store. One of the favies to do was trying on hats for hours in the milinary department of the finest stores. Like Sears, Montgomery Ward and Rubensteins. What a wonderful time period.

Hi Becky--
I love this post! I have always loved hats, as far back as I can remember. The only ones I wear now are straw, but OH! How I miss that beautiful black hat with the big satin rose.
Love you-- Mom
