BROKENNESS BRINGS RESTORATION

MY NIECE, BRIDGETTE

In the midst of the brokenness brought about by the recent passing of my mother, God has truly been faithful in one amazing, miraculous way.

He's restored her family.

I won't go into the back story because right now all that needs to be shared is that forgiveness has been sought and given, and most importantly...

Love has won.

Reconciliation was the cry of my mother's heart and she's witnessed restoration among her children from the best vantage point possible...

HEAVEN.

SWEET BRIDGY...PRECIOUS IN HIS SIGHT

If you've lost a parent, then you know going though their home is probably the most difficult of all the things a child must do, save for maybe planning a funeral and burying them.  My mother had only meager fare.  As many of you may remember, my father was a clergyman and they lived on a very modest income.  When my dad died almost four years ago he left her with financial debt and almost nothing to live on, but his paltry social security.  She had no house, no savings, no investments and no retirement.  That said, she did have a few minor treasures and handmade heirlooms and all of her children longed to call them their own.
 MAY GOD RAISE HER UP!

My siblings and I breathed in deep at what was before us when we walked into her tiny home.  While going through our mother's humble possessions we opted to leave the task of dividing up precious cedar chest keepsakes for last.  As we opened up the lid to the tattered trunk, the one that was years older than I am, we all knelt silently around it for each of us knew it held what meant the most to her...the best of all she had.  We didn't really know what we would find...what she had kept...all she had held closest to her heart.
 OUR FATHER'S LETTERS

Inside we found love letters from my father...written when in the Navy and she was pregnant with my oldest sister.  They had yet to be married a year.  He would miss her birth as he was out to sea...  She bore their first child alone.

I can only imagine.

There were small quilts and outfits she'd made for each of her babies, our baby shoes, our favorite toys, her baby book and her mother's baby book.
 50 YEAR+ CROCHETED BABY GOODS

Our original expertly crocheted baby bibs, bottle covers were there (very discolored and worn) along with old greeting cards, report cards, photos and so much more.
 RECENTLY CROCHETED GOODS FOR
ADRIENNE (daughter)

We also found our uniforms for Girl Scouts, Brownies and my brother's Boy Scout uniform in the bottom of the chest...everything was there...the belts, ties, sashes, socks, caps, berets, badges, pins, etc.  Everything.
MY BROWNIE UNIFORM AND SOCKS

My beautiful mother wasn't a hoarder...but she was a saver.  She saved the best of all she had and the very things she knew her children would want...

God Bless her.

My precious, niece, Bridgy, is ten and is in Girl Scouts today.  I sent my uniform home with my younger, sister, Jen, in hopes it would fit her and incredibly it does.  One more year and it would have probably been too small.  I can't begin to tell you the overwhelming JOY I carry in my heart seeing this beautiful, beautiful little girl wearing a part of me.  Yesterday she wore this very vintage uniform while selling GS Cookies for her local troop.  I don't know about you, but if I saw a young Scout today in a vintage uniform I would certainly buy MORE cookies than I had planned to buy!  She looked so precious! She is an amazing little girl and I'm thrilled to be a part of her life.  I'm praying for God to raise her up to become the woman one day He wants her to be!
FAITH AND I

I don't have a picture of me in my GS uniform, but, I do have one of my big sister and I taken in our uniforms back when she was a Girl Scout and I was a Brownie.  Amazingly, my Momma still had it after all these years...

I guess if I've learned one thing since my Mother's death it might be this...

Praying matters.

My Mother was a prayer warrior and she never stopped praying for those she loved, especially for her babies.  She prayed for years that her children would come together and stop squabbling over things that were not eternal.  We've always loved each other...I suppose the scars from life just run deep sometimes.

My brother-in-love, Rob, said it best~

"When that cedar chest was opened something spiritual happened!"

I believe he was right.  It was like the spirit of God was set free and His mighty hand passed over all four of us kids in a profound way.
JENNIFER, WILLIAM, ME, FAITH

I know today, without a shadow of a doubt, my beautiful Momma is at rest...

Thank you, Mom.  Even in death you have never stopped interceding to the Father for your children.  Thank you for saving back so much of our childhood for us and for allowing us to take a look back into your private life as a young wife and mother.  I want you to know your prayers mattered.
 _____________________________________________

I hope if any of you reading this today, who might need to seek peace or restoration within friends or family, you will do it.  It takes courage and it is sometimes difficult.  But, with God's help, you can do it.

It's worth it.  I promise you, it is.

Love to you this beautiful Sunday...

~HEAVENBOUND~ - MY BEAUTIFUL MOMMA~

 My Beautiful Momma
(Celebrating Another Grandchild's Wedding)

It's been a really long time since I looked at my old blog and even longer since I cared about sharing my thoughts with you.

My Blog.

Funny how the one thing that once brought me so much joy...the thing my heart was truly wrapped up in and sang aloud for...the thing that became so much of my daily focus...the thing that brought incredible purpose and meaning to my life, one day just began to slowly fade away into pretty much nothingness.

Not sure what happened.
Things just change, I guess.

My Mom's Family
(Aunt Lil, Mom, Grandpa, Grandma, Great-Grandma
Cousin Larry, Sister, Sister)

Blog or no blog, over the years I have changed and with each passing day I feel myself changing more and more.  But, nothing has wrought within me a bigger change than the loss of my dearest friend, confidant and mentor, my Mother.
 Me In My Momma's Arms
(My Mother, Me, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother
and Big Sister, Linda)

Her name was Barbara Helen Martin Elliott and she passed away early Christmas Eve morning at the age of 83.

To tell you I'm irrevocably broken over her death can't even begin to describe the pain I carry inside my heart.  My Momma had a tough life...she deserved more and I prayed God would give her more.  I asked Him time and time again to fill her coffers with all things good and lovely and He did.  But, I wanted more for her.

An easier time.
Less sorrow.
Financial freedom.
Restoration of her family.
A healed heart.

My Mother lived with heart disease for many years and although her death was unexpected, I knew she was growing weaker and the chances of her living to the age of 92, like her own Mother, were fairly small.  Still I prayed for her to stay with me...selfishly, I wanted her to remain a physical presence in my life.

There were so many things I still wanted her to teach me.
So many things I still needed to learn.
My Momma at Two

As my three siblings and I worked to clear out her home over holiday break I became overwhelmed with grief.  It came in the knowing she would never see with earthly eyes the sun come up on another Christmas morning...or feel the beautiful breeze of one more first day of spring.  She wouldn't be here to witness the first of many red robins confidently perched outside my kitchen window, make another heirloom quality baby quilt and most of all, wouldn't be here to celebrate with me the birth of my next grandchild.

I didn't know how I could go on.

My Mother with my Sister Linda

But, as I've known since I was a young child, God is both faithful and full of mercy.  Somehow, within my own crushed and battered spirit, He allowed my Mother to come to me.  She came to me in the words of the one song she said she loved to sing most -
 My Lovely Mother

LEAVE IT THERE

If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold,

And you have to get along with meager fare,

Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Leave it there, leave it there,

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there;

If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain,

And your soul is almost sinking in despair,

Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your enemies assail and your heart begins to fail,

Don’t forget that God in Heaven answers prayer;

He will make a way for you and will lead you safely through—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on,

And your body bends beneath the weight of care;

He will never leave you then, He’ll go with you to the end—

Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

My Mother's unwavering faith has sustained me throughout my life and I owe her more than I can say~ Her voice, though sweetly ordinary, gave to me endless gifts... The early teaching of Bible stories and simple songs will never end and the melody of love that lived within her will never die.  Truth will live on in her children...and in their children and in their children...
My Parents When I Was A Teen

Two-thousand seventeen was a tough year.  I had spine surgery in March, our beloved 14+ year old Yorkie, Mollie, passed away in August, our dearly loved brother-in-love succumbed in October after a massive stroke and then my precious Mother has journeyed to heaven in December.  With each challenge and loss I've somehow remained grateful to God for sustaining me and giving me the a perfect peace found only in Him.  But...the losses have been very, very hard.

In closing...

So, to the woman who gave me life...

"Thank you, Mom! You gave me so much more than I ever realized.  Thank you for those years of early instruction, for the faith you carried within your heart in spite of knowing of your own imperfection.  Your belief in me has carried me for all my 59 years and I trust you will continue to guide me until I reunite with you on the other side.  I thank God today for giving you 83 plus years!  I will miss your physical presence for all my days and will bless you for the remainder of my life.  I love you...Becky"

About my Blog...well...I don't know.  I may just leave it as it is for whomever happens upon it...and then again I may continue.  Time will tell.  I just can't say for sure right now.

In the meantime...
May God bring the path you are to travel this year into focus and the calling on your life clear.

Love to you all,

SHARING A LITTLE UPDATE....Missing You All!

Dear Blogger Friends...

It's been over eight weeks since I last posted an update for you.  Not sure how many of you are still checking in...  I know...it's been a long time.
At PINKS in Cali Last Month

Yesterday, one of my all-time favorite bloggers and friends wrote me the kindest message and I guess it just gave me the needed PUSH to fill you all in on what's been happening.

So...if you are still wondering where I'm at and what I'm doing, keep reading!

I've shared with you about the car accident that my Mr. AGPMan, our daughter, Adrienne, and I were in last May.  Well...for the most part the two of them have healed up and for that I'm so very thankful.  It goes without saying that they were, and remain, my greatest concern.  However...I still have some lingering issues that are proving to make me both overwhelmed, depressed and, well, kinda scared.

I will spare you the details and only say this:

I'm still under a doctor's care.
I'm still in physical therapy.
I'm still TRYING to create and list on my website (although I'm failing miserably at keeping up!)...
I'm still have my Booth at Serendipity Market in Edmond, OK...

and...

I'm still hopeful that I will regain my health and find wellness in my future.
I'm still trusting God for better tomorrows and remain grateful and thankful for my life.

I would be less than honest with you if I told you this entire ordeal hasn't caused me to reflect a great deal on my life.  I understand better just WHAT is important and the things that truly matter.
  At HS Reunion/B-Day

My big sister and I made it to our HS Birthday Party a couple of weeks ago and that brought me great joy.  Wonderful to see old friends and to reconnect.  Above is a photo taken that night.  I removed an old friend from the picture...it's the only decent one taken of me with my eyes OPEN!  (Ugh!)  And in case your wondering...this is what my HS friends remember me looking like!  Sure do miss my young skin!!!
 My Senior Picture 1976
(too funny not to share!)

Very thankful I was able to attend the celebration (it was my school's 50th Birthday and classes from 1966-1976 were invited!).  A big thanks goes out to my brother for putting me up and my sis for traveling with me so I wouldn't have to fly out and back alone.

 Our Miss Mollie
(a few years ago!)

Our little Yorkie, Mollie (who will be 14 in January) is ill and probably won't be with us too much longer.  I've been blessed to have this precious doggie in my home since she was just a few weeks old and we love her as any pet-parent loves their animals.  She's seen me through many, many things~both good and not-so-good...  Our prayer is that we will know the best time to say a gentle good-bye.
Our Son, Brandon
(a few  years ago!)

Lastly...I want to share with you that my son, Brandon, will be having major surgery on Tuesday, November 1st.  As a momma probably does, I guess I still look at my grown children as "my babies".  I'm concerned, as any parent would be, but I know he's in capable hands...

Those here on earth and in heaven.

And so...there you go!  I'm pressing on.  I appreciate any prayers you can offer up in my behalf.  I've missed you all so much.

May God continue to bless you all.
I hope to share more soon.

Love to you~

Rebecca

~FIRST DAY IN HEAVEN~

William Edgar Elliott
March 4, 1930 - February 20, 2014

My beloved father went home to be with Jesus early yesterday evening after more than a decade long battle with dementia.  Although our hearts are broken, we rejoice he is now in heaven encircled by those who have passed on before him and the God he has loved so much.
To those of you who have shared in my heartbreak over the years, read my writings, sent notes, left comments, made visits, etc., I can't begin to thank you.  Your kindness to me and my family has helped forged friendships that will last a lifetime.
Please pray for us as we plan the going-home-celebration of my daddy's life.  It is our hope and deepest desire to make him proud.

Love,

~BEGINNING AGAIN~

Blessings to you all for a Happy New Year!

Thank you for all the notes and comments as we said an earthly goodbye to my hubby's dad just after Christmas.  Tough times during the holidays this year and honestly we are so glad they are over.

We returned from Nebraska late last night after nearly a week long family gathering that included the memorial/funeral for my Mr. AGPMan's father.   He was buried with full military honors and the service was beautiful.

Needless to say we are glad to be home.  The skies turned cold and ominous the night before we left and we hit crummy weather during the entire drive through Kansas.  Once we hit Oklahoma the roads were clear once again.

Our La Chaumière de Briarwood never looked so good.

Hope to share fun stuff with you soon.  Thank you again for all the kind words and expressions of love and sympathy for our family.

Love to you...

~SNAPSHOTS and SEPIA DREAMS~

When your only grandchild comes to stay for two whole weeks at her Nana's house you've got to get creative to keep things interesting...  If not the long summer days can go bust in a big fat hurry!  So~what did I do to keep one amazing ten year old from getting totally bored day-in and day-out?
Well...after days of doing the usual...swimming, shopping (lots of shopping!), reading, movie watching, taking walks, working on my booth (yes...she helped me) we had to find something different and out of the norm to do...  And so....
We played DRESS-UP!!!  Or at least my Miss K did!
Together (um...it was more MY idea than HER idea) we decided to pull the clothes off one of my display mannequins and with the trusty aid of a few safety pins my favorite little girl in the whole wide world was dressed to the nines.  We curled up her hair and added just a wee bit of lip-gloss and mascara to her already beautiful face...grabbed an old hat and shoes for some props and away we went to the backyard for some picture-taking-fun!

I can't even begin to tell you how much fun I had and what a trooper my Miss K was during the entire process of photographing her.  Even when it started to get a tiny bit warm outside (imagine all the clothes) she didn't complain one little bit....
I always wanted to do something like this when my daughter, Adrienne, was little.  But...back then we didn't have digital cameras...no Photo Shop, no Paint Shop Pro, and certainly no way to manipulate photographs via the computer like you can today!

Adrienne grew up and I never did get those dress-up pictures taken...  I'd give almost anything if had some photos taken with my old 110 camera or 35mm...
Anyway...by the the time Miss K and I were finished with all the pictures (only took about 10-15 minutes) we came in and snacked on peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwiches and sipped on sweet tea.  A fabulously FUN MEMORY TO MAKE and a day I will never forget.

I told my girl how special she was to me and promised her that one day...hopefully a long, long time from now...the pictures would mean a lot to her as well.  I told her I knew it was hard to picture herself as an older lady, but that one day she would be and she would have grandchildren of her own.  I hope she will look back on this afternoon and the memories we made and will remember it as a special time in her life.

In November Miss K will turn eleven.  Not many more chances to snap photos like this.  Before long she'll be a teenager and moments like this will have passed us by.  So happy we were able to carve some time out of our busy lives to create something lasting...and forever.

Make your day count!

Love to you...

~FOUR LETTERS~

Underneath the vintage four poster bed in our guest room sit two very large boxes.  Filled to the brim and overflowing you'll find all my treasured keepsakes and my tender-heart mementos crammed inside.  I don't know what it is about paper things ~ I just can't toss them out.  From as far back as I can remember I've saved almost every family letter I've ever received.  If a greeting card included a special note, well then, I saved those as well.

After thirty-four years of marriage you can imagine all the treasures tucked inside those boxes.

One day my children will surely think me crazy for holding onto so much...
A few days ago I pulled out one of the boxes in search of something for an old high school friend.  While rummaging through the first box I came across four old letters written over thirty years ago and since I had nothing pressing to do I decided to sit down and open them up...

The letters are tattered and worn and the paper has yellowed.
The first one was from my Grandfather and dated May 1976.
One was from my Mother dated November 1978.
One was from my Father dated May 1979.
The last one was from my Mr. AGPMan's Mother and it was sent in April 1978 a few months before we married.
As I opened up the letter from my Grandfather I couldn't help but smile as I immediately recognized his loopy, artistic handwriting.  As a professional painter he had a flourish that was uniquely his own and I loved reading the precious words he penned just for me.  In 1976 he was 68 years old and was already showing the beginning signs of dementia.  Even so, he was clear minded enough to talk about my upcoming high school graduation and my future college plans.  He said I love you and I miss you and told me to BEHAVE...:)

By the time I finished reading his words I wanted to read them again...  My Grandpa's been gone over twenty years now...
The second letter I read was written by my Mother.  Mailed to me just after my hubby and I married, her handwriting is unmistakable.  She has beautiful penmanship and I would know her handwriting anywhere.

At the time her letter was written she was younger than I am today.  In 1978 she had just turned 44 years old and my two younger siblings were still at home (and two foster little girls, too).  Her words spoke of how much she missed me, how beautiful our wedding had been and how proud she was of Steve and I.

My mother is now 78 years old and her written words mean even more to me today.
The letter from my Father made me cry.  Written while pastoring a small church in Texas, he was only 49 back in 1979 and many years would pass before the monster would come to live inside his head.

My Dad's handwriting was always a bit scrunched up and certainly written in a style all his own.  He spoke of how he missed me and how I had grown up and left him far too soon...He shared a short prayer for Steve and I, mostly for our finances (we were seriously struggling with a broken down 1967 Chevy Impala).  He said his missed my guitar playing and singing and hoped to see me soon.  At the time I was only 19 and today I'm just beginning to understand how difficult it must have been for him allowing me to marry at such a young age...

For over ten years now my Father has lived in a local nursing home.  The letters stopped a couple of years before as he was no longer able to form sentences in his mind to write.

I miss him and his letters...

The last letter I read was from Steve's Mother.  I don't recall ever reading it before and I was taken aback by the clarity of her words.   It was written when she was only 48 years old...before Steve and I married, before we had babies, before she was a Gramma and long, long before Steve's Father became ill.

In her letter she spoke of her excitement over our upcoming wedding and how much she missed her second son...

Today my Momma-In-Love is almost 83 and struggles to write anymore...  I miss her funny words, and reading the stories of her life and her faith...

~~*~~

Letter writing is such a personal thing and the joys of a handwritten letter last more than a lifetime...  Electronic correspondence (or emailing) has replaced so much and I think it's such a sad thing when you actually think about it~

I think it's time for me to pick up some paper, grab a pen and write some letters of my own...

Yeah...it's time.

~~*~~

Love to you.
Hope your day is wonderful.
