~REMEMBERING MY BEAUTIFUL, BLESSED MOTHER~

My days and nights are running together since the passing of my beautiful Mom last Christmas Eve.  The last several weeks have been difficult.
I am sad.  I feel lonely.  The tears won't stop flowing and I can't help but wonder if the pain in my chest will ever end.

~*~

The following obituary was written by my sister, Jennifer, and appeared in the Sunday Oklahoman, January 28, 2018.

He will gather, He will gather
The gems for His kingdom,
All the pure ones, all the bright ones,
His loved and His own.
Like the stars of the morning,
His bright crown adorning,
They shall shine in their beauty,
Bright gems for His crown.

–William Cushing, 1856

Barbara Helen Martin Elliott was born October 1, 1934 in Carbondale Illinois, and died on Christmas Eve 2017, in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was the eldest daughter of Phillip Webster Martin and Bertie Bain Martin.

Barbara lived in Carbondale until the age of 12. She loved school and was an outstanding student. At the age of 5, she accepted Jesus into her heart and began her lifelong journey as a Christian. She was her grandfather’s favorite and he was instrumental in her salvation. Later, Barbara was instrumental in the salvation of her entire family.

In 1946, the family moved to Southern California. In 1952, Barbara graduated from Excelsior High School. She was a member of Art Club and National Honor Society.

Following high school, she worked as a secretary. She loved dating, fashion and church. In October 1955, she met a sailor, William Elliott, at the Bellflower Church of the Nazarene. They married six weeks later. Of this union was born four children who gave her 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. All were her crown and glory.

Despite her small, fixed income, she never forgot anyone’s birthday and shopped sales all year so she could give everyone a Christmas present. She supported numerous charities.

Barbara was a working mother. She worked for the La Puente School District, CA; International Students, Inc., CO and Washington County, OK. Her biggest job, however, was as a Nazarene preacher’s wife. She was devoted to her calling. She served with her husband through pastorates in Galveston, Kermit and Gilmer TX; Ozark, AR; Caney, KS and Bartlesville. The rural church scene was a mission field marked by low wages and poverty. She shined through the sacrifices. She hosted showers, potlucks, sang and played piano. She loved supporting Nazarene missionaries. To encourage people to read missionary books, she created a poster featuring paper crowns. Everyone who signed up to read books got a crown. When you finished a book, she added a little plastic jewel to your crown. Our dear mother has now received the imperishable crowns that heaven bestows.

Barbara was a talented artist. She quilted, crocheted, painted, sewed and knitted. She was the world’s best Girl Scout leader. She was a prayer warrior who spent hours in prayer every day for her family. When she saw War Room, she cheered in ovation at the end. She was an amazing Sunday School teacher who taught the Gospel to children with the Wordless Book. This is her greatest legacy: A devout follower of Jesus Christ. If you are reading this, she would want you to know she loved you, because she loved everyone.

Barbara was 83, but she died unexpectedly, at home. She died doing what she loved: Keeping busy and anticipating celebrating our Lord’s birth with her children and grandchildren. All who loved her are devastated by the loss, but rejoice that she joined Jesus on his birthday. She will remain with him throughout eternity.

Throughout her life, Barbara spoke of the babies she lost in miscarriage. The moment she died she held them in her arms for the first time. This makes her happier than words can possibly say.
The family thanks Oklahoma Heart Hospital and Dr. John M. Williams for 14 years of care. Thank you for all the times you saved her.

Mom is survived by her children, Faith Bybee, Dickson, TN; Rebecca Nelson, and husband Steven, Edmond; William Elliott, and wife Ginger, West Covina, CA; Jennifer McCollum and husband Robert, OKC. Grandkids, Jayson Bybee, April Tummins, Cathrine Holloway, TN; Brandon Nelson, AL; Adrienne Weigel, Edmond; Bethany Lyons, Brittany Diamond, SD; Juliette James (Nanny’s “Angel”), Sullivan and Bridgette McCollum, OKC; seven great-grandchildren; dog Missy, and sisters Phyllis and Cherryle. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law Greg Bybee, and husband, William Elliott.

Rest in peace dear Momma, Grandma, Nanny.

Wait for us. We will be with you soon.

~~~~WILL THIS CUPCAKE MAKE ME FAT?~~~~ And Other Interesting Stuff
I love writing about cupcakes, but I'd much rather be eating them!
(And yes!  This cupcake WILL make you fat!)
When I was still a little girl I learned early on I was blessed with one very talented mother.  I've shared with you before how she was truly before her time.  Creatively gifted and spiritually refined, I owe so much of who I am today to my Mom and her 'never-give-up-attitude'.  She pressed through during many difficult days and I know for sure I do not possess the best that lies within her.  Life has not been easy for my Mom...  She is, and always will be, the strongest person I've ever known.
And the most talented.
When my mother married my father in 1955 she was given a Woman's Home Companion Cookbook as a wedding gift.  (I've written about this before but it's been a long time now!)  I remember as a child pouring over the pages of the cookbook and dreaming about the things I was going to bake when I grew up.
Many  years ago my mother gifted me with an identical cookbook and it's been a mainstay in my kitchen ever since!  If you want to hunt down a great vintage cookbook that tells you WHAT to do and how to do it, then this book is the one you!  Not just a bunch of recipes!
(Love that!!)
 These sweet rose-topped cupcakes were baked using a Coconut Cake Recipe that is pushing sixty years old.  Paired with yummy Butter Frosting from the same cookbook they are totally divine!  My Mom painstakingly tried to teach me to make a rose out of decorator frosting when I was about nine or ten...  I think I managed to pipe out about two or three and I recall them being such sad little things!  Even today I still can't make a rose like she does...
Soo~let it be said!  I like cake!
Cupcakes to be more specific!
I know...I know!  Everybody seems to LOVE CUPCAKES these days and as I shared with you the other day I think that's the funniest thing!  Who would have ever thought that a stand-alone-cupcake-shoppe would ever be successful???
Given the prices on some of the little confections I've seen behind their glass cases I'm thinking they just might be making a killing...
Last weekend I spent a little time making these sweet cupcakes for a summertime gathering for three of my closest friends.  We had a fun time chatting and sharing and eating!
(Eat Cupcakes!  Be Happy!)
 I found these amazing paper muffin cups at Tuesday Morning and you need to check them out!  They are gourmet quality and trust me when I tell you "they aren't your momma's muffin-cup!"
 They weren't cheap, but like everything at TM they were off-priced.  The paper peeled away from the cake and the cake was actually left in tact!  Nothing gets me more than leaving half my muffin (or cupcake!) on the paper.  There is NO GOOD WAY to respectfully chew it off in public! :(
I opted to pipe the icing onto the cupcakes this time and I actually love how they came out!  But...that's alotta frosting!
~CUPCAKE  FRIENDS~
Soft vanilla teacakes
Butter-cream in pink
Tied with silky ribbons
With a bit of tea to drink~
Dainty with a rose
Trimmed with paper laces
For a party, you suppose?
Just friends and sweet
~SWEET KEEPSAKES FOR A SPECIAL BABY~
 ~HAND CROCHETED BABY SWEATER SET~
My Mother who is now closer to 80 than she is to 70 is amazingly talented.  I've shared with you before that most of all I've ever learned in my life came from her.  Sadly, one of the things I don't can't do is crochet.  I want to learn someday...just have so little extra time, but it IS on my 2-Do-List!
~LOVER'S KNOT~
About a month ago I learned one of my nieces was expecting her first bundle of joy and she's having a girl.  It's become a little tradition in our family to gift the mother-to-be with a hand-crocheted baby sweater set as a new baby keepsake.
 ~TINY LITTLE BOOTIES~
I still have the ones made for my children and they are very special to me.  I've kept them in pristine condition and one day I will pass them down...
~FRILLY LITTLE BONNET~
My Mom fashioned a darling little sweater, bonnet and booties and I just love how they came out.  I especially love the tiny embroidered rosebuds and minty green leaves...
~HAND EMBROIDERED ROSEBUDS~
In a day when so much is mass-produced it still does my heart good to see something lovingly made by hand.  Just about any of us can pick something up at our local Baby's-R-Us or Tarjay (Target), but to take the TIME to create something that takes hours and hours to do...well...
priceless...don't you think?
(Thanks, Momma!  You're the best!)
Today I'm off to swim with my Miss K (gosh...remember her???) at our local water park.  Can you feel my angst joy?
Yeah...I'm so happy about it I'm still in my PJ's...
Hope your day is wonderful.  I'll be slathering on anti-wrinkle cream sunblock by the truck-loads.
Love to you...
SONGS IN ORDINARY TIME
MY BEAUTIFUL MOTHER - 1965
If you were to ask my three siblings and I what the mainstay in our home was during our growing up years I believe each one of us would agree that it was our Gulbransen Piano. From as far back as I can remember my Mother's piano was in every home we ever lived in. It was a source of pride for her and rarely did a day pass by without hearing the familiar sounds of the keyboard. The piano was maple in color and within it's bench you could find songbook after songbook of mostly Christian music. On the attached music stand she displayed her favorite chorus books and church hymnals and there they would stay for many, many years.
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC BOOKS
Gospel Songs were always a part of our home and my Mother spent many hours teaching us the little bit that she knew about them and the music she had grown to love. My mother's piano playing would never have won any awards...she will tell you that herself! She plunked more wrong keys than she did right ones... Still, she could always be found in the early evenings working on a song or two, her pretty voice singing along with the music that sat before her. It would only be a few years before we would all begin to notice the devastating affect nerve deafness would have upon her and how it would eventually steal from her the gift of sound...
While searching today for some misplaced photos, I stumbled upon my Mother's beloved songbooks. I'd nearly forgotten she'd given them to me many years ago, back when I purchased a piano of my own. Dusty and worn, I pulled the fragile books out from their hiding place and began to leaf through their gently loved pages. I couldn't help but smile as I read the noteworthy titles of those beautiful, but aging melodies...
"Got Any Rivers?"..."Follow Me"..."He Giveth More Grace"...
In my mind I could hear my Mother's sweet voice whispering the tunes that had grown so dear to her~songs she lovingly sang to us, her children. Songs of faith...songs of hope...songs of peace, love and redemption. As I turned to the page that still held an old paperclip in it's grasp, I instantly recalled the song on page 4 as being one of her favorites...
As I read again the familiar words before me I was instantly taken back to my childhood. Long before my mother's ears were silenced and long before she felt it necessary to pack all of her music away.
"HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN?"
Is it possible that over four decades have passed since I snuggled up next to her as she read to me my favorite Bible stories? Forty years since I listened to her fragile, waning voice sing aloud the very song I held within my hands?
"How Long Has It Been?"
by Mosie Lister - 1956
"How long has it been since you talked with the Lord
And told Him your heart's hidden secrets?
How long since you prayed?
How long since you stayed
On your knees till the light shone through?
How long has it been since your mind felt at ease?
How long since your heart knew no burden?
Can you call Him your Friend?
How long has it been
Since you knew that He cared for you?
How long has it been since you knelt by your bed
And prayed to the Lord up in Heaven?
How long since you knew
That He'd answer you
And would keep you the long night through?
How long has it been since you woke with the dawn
And felt that the day's worth the living?
Can you call Him your friend?
How long has it been
Since you knew that He cared for you?"
My Mother's unwavering faith has sustained me throughout my life and I owe her so much~ Her voice, tho sweetly ordinary, gave to me an amazing gift... Songs that will never end and a melody that will never die... Her music and the message live on in her children...
So, to the woman who gave me life...
Thank you, Mom! You've given me so much more than I ever realized. Thank you for those years of early instruction and for the message behind the music! I carry the Truths both you and daddy taught me within my heart today! Happy Mother's Day a few days early. I couldn't wait to tell you...xoBeck
Blessings to you as you remember the good stuff...Rebecca
